Food & Wine | Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore comes to Canada

I am a believer in the power of Food & Wine in every day life. With my focus on the Canadian market, I am always looking to support homegrown products and brands that best represent the Canadian wine production both at home and abroad. But what about International Wine regions and varietals that arrive in Canada to best represent their markets? Sometimes the fact remains that Canada , as amazing as it is, simply cannot produce wine like they can. Every so often the world of Canadian Wine is made better by the availability of International products, varietals and regions.

Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore (say that 3 times fast!) is one of those regions which has recently launched a massive campaign in Canada to promote both this iconic Italian wine region and its main export Prosecco Superiore. Let me tell you why, if you’re in the market for an Italian Prosecco that represents the best of Italian Prosecco, this is what you need to be looking for next.

Prosecco is one of those sparkling wine products that if you haven’t had the chance to try, you absolutely must. The Italian version of French Champagne or Spanish Cava, the lineage of Italian Prosecco and Prosecco Superiore (levels of distinction awarded to the production product similar to a vintage wine versus a general release) is one that is historically a huge part of Italian culture.

“The area of Conegliano-Valdobbiadene lies only 50 km from Venice and from the Dolomites and is situated in a hilly territory where man has dedicated himself to vine-growing for centuries, creating a landscape that is so appealing that it is now a candidate to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The small towns of Conegliano and aldobbiadene, situated 40 km from each other, are the two «capitals» that give the denomination its name and they differ in terms of their specific roles in history and production.”

Traditionally, Italian Spumante DOCG (Denominazione di origine controllata) sparkling wine is known for its fresh and elegant flavours, and is characterized by refined bubbles and fruity notes. The Prosecco Superiore, which is produced in the historic area of the beautiful hills of Conegliano Valdobbiadene, continues the history and traditions of the Denomination abroad and has recently arrived in Canada in a very big way.

This initiative is part of the project “L’essenza del Veneto in un bicchiere” (“The Essence of Veneto in a glass”), which aims at promoting the wines from Veneto in the world and involves the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Consortium and Valpolicella Wines Consortiums making their presence known in Canada and abroad. Eight wineries of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene area will take lead to ensure that Canada has to benefit from their beautiful products: Astoria, Colli del Soligo, Colvendrà, Conte Collalto, Sorelle Bronca, Tenuta degli Ultimi, Val d’Oca and Valdo. All 8 of which I highly recommend you take note of and try the next time you’re in the mood for something sparkling that will change your life for the better.

So why Canada and why now? Both for its enormous market share and registered as one of the best performers for growth in the wine world, it was a natural fit to bring these amazing products and this beautiful region to our borders in a big way. Basically Canadians rock and we love our wines, be they home grown or from abroad.

I am by no means a Sommelier yet, but if you would like some great information on the Conegliano Valdobbiadene wine region I highly suggest you watch the video below to expand your knowledge like it did mine.

So what now you ask? You’ve learnt about this amazing region of Italy. You’ve learnt that it is famous for its production of Prosecco. And you’ve learnt that Canada is one of the best countries in the world for wine makers to bring their products to. Now my friend, it’s time to get out and try some for yourself. Prosecco embodies the lively spirit of the summer and is always perfect for toasting a special occasion. With a vast variety of Conegliano Valdobbiadene Presecco Superiore from coast to coast available for purchase, what better time to get out and try this beautiful bubbly?

Please remember to enjoy responsibly and never drink and drive.
